The Mexican Redknee Tarantula (Brachypelma smithi) is one of the most iconic and recognizable tarantula species in the world, famous for its striking orange-red leg markings and docile temperament! Native to the Pacific coast of Mexico, these large spiders can have a leg span of 5-6 inches and live for an impressive 25-30 years (females can live even longer!). Despite their intimidating appearance, Mexican Redknee Tarantulas are gentle creatures that rarely bite—they prefer to flick urticating (irritating) hairs from their abdomen as a defense mechanism when threatened. These ground-dwelling spiders live in burrows and hunt at night, feeding on insects, small lizards, and mice. They're ambush predators that wait near their burrow entrance for prey to pass by. Mexican Redknee Tarantulas are popular in the pet trade due to their calm nature, stunning appearance, and longevity. Sadly, they're endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and over-collection, making captive breeding programs important for conservation. They're protected under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species)!
